Travis Barker, the drummer in the band Blink-182, recently launched his own CBD wellness brand. Barker Wellness is a company that sells CBD-infused wellness products that are vegan and cruelty-free.
These THC-free products, which are intended to nurture both physical and mental health, are inspired by Barker’s own journey to find the right healing products for his needs.
Discovering a natural way to recover
According to Rolling Stone, Barker began developing this company about two years ago after coming off a year of touring with his band.
“As a symptom of being in the music space and just touring, I would always do a CBD bath or an Epsom salt bath or take a ton of CBD after shows,” Barker told Rolling Stone. “I started to notice that recovery was an issue, especially touring for months [and] doing five to six shows a week. And the process became like ‘How do I feel with recovery?’ I tried everything from cryotherapy to massage therapy . . . but CBD was like the best kind of result that I got.”
When searching for the right recovery products, Barker reportedly looked for something that could offer the pain relief he needed after outdoor shows, but also something that would help him manage his restlessness and insomnia.
“I used to have trouble with sleep,” Barker said, “and I would take a ton of melatonin, valerian tea, Tylenol PM, or Nyquil. And before that it was actually Ambien . . . I was addicted to that at one point.”
Barker explained that he was ultimately looking for more “natural ways to wind down” after a show or a studio session. That’s when he reportedly found CBD.
The search for the perfect formulas
“I started trying lots of different CBD products in my own daily routine and saw their benefits first hand. So I decided to create my own ideal formulas and share them with anyone looking to improve their general health,” Barker told Veg News.
“While a lot of the traditional cannabinoid companies primarily use CBD, it was important that our formulas incorporated some of the lesser-known but highly powerful cannabinoids like CBG, CBN, and CBC. The full combination of these cannabinoids, herbs, and natural ingredients makes these highly effective for targeting different needs,” he added.
While developing his brand, Barker reportedly spend hours with researchers learning about the effects that different cannabinoids and different dosages can have on the body. His goal was to strategically design his product line so that it includes the types of products that people would actually use.
Barker Wellness currently sells three different types of products, including tinctures, snap packets and pain relief cream. The tinctures come in formulas focused on maintenance, recovery and sleep. The snap packets, which are single dose tincture packets, come in formulas focused on energy and relaxation.
A desire for natural and cruelty-free products
Another important component to Barker’s business is the commitment to vegan and cruelty-free products. Barker has reportedly been a vegetarian since he was a teenager. He took his health a step further by becoming vegan after surviving a plane crash in 2008.
Veganism is the practice of abstaining from eating any animal products, including eggs, dairy and honey. Many vegans extend this beyond their diet by also abstaining from using any product that contains animal-derived ingredients.
Barker told Rolling Stone that it was important to him to create a product line that reflects his values. As a result, all of the products offered by Barker Wellness are vegan and cruelty-free.
Barker Wellness also prioritizes the use of natural ingredients in its products. Aside from the CBD itself, some of the natural ingredients featured in the products include aloe vera juice, cucumber extract, ashwagandha extract, reishi mushroom extract and green tea extract.
An emphasis on accessibility
Although the company’s focus is on promoting healing and wellness, misconceptions about CBD products are rampant and there may always be some people who are a little skeptical. Barker told Rolling Stone that many of his friends and family have tried the products and helped him perfect details like the scents of the products. However, his dad started off as one of the skeptics.
“My father has these aches and pains but to get him to even entertain the idea [of CBD] took a little while,” Barker said.
Barker wanted his company to be approachable and accessible for everyone, even the skeptics. He reportedly settled on a ‘wellness’ approach to the brand because he felt it would best support this goal.
Barker reportedly said that he is excited for both fans and skeptics to see for themselves what kinds of benefits cannabinoids, like CBD, can offer.
