Martha Stewart launches her own line of pet CBD products

Martha Stewart’s CBD products have literally gone to the dogs. The businesswoman who is well-known for her lifestyle merchandise recently added a line of pet products to her CBD brand. Her new product offerings include soft-baked chews and oil drops.

These products come in flavors most pets would approve of, such as chicken and cranberry, chicken and blueberry, and chicken, blueberry and anise. Some of the products even have different formulas to promote different benefits, such as wellness, calm, and mobility.

“Just as CBD can support human wellness, it’s been shown to improve the quality of life for pets as well,” Stewart reportedly said in a press release.

Stewart’s CBD products for pets first became available January 26. She is a relatively new player in the CBD game, having only announced her CBD product line for humans in September. However, her CBD products were created in partnership with Canopy Growth, a Canadian-based cannabis company.

Stewart reportedly joined Canopy Growth in 2019 after being introduced to the company’s founder by Snoop Dogg, whose line of cannabis products is also produced by Canopy Growth.

The decision for Stewart to expand her CBD offerings to pets may have been a predictable one. According to her website, Stewart is an animal lover who owns many pets, including “four dogs, three cats, multiple horses, over 200 chickens, peacocks, canaries, and dozens of geese.”

The packaging for her CBD pet products was even reportedly inspired by her own dogs, which are Chow Chows and French Bulldogs.

Stewart indicated in a press release that her line of CBD gummies for people has been successful, and that expansion to pet products may have been a natural step forward for her brand.

“We very successfully launched our beautiful line of gummies based on my idea of what gummy should taste like— which is a pâte de fruit— the lovely French confection which is often served at the end of a gourmet meal. And it occurred to me that dogs, too, like good taste,” Steward reportedly said.

Stewart’s products were designed with the help of Dr. Bob Menardi, DVM, Director of Veterinary Technical and Educational Services at Canopy Animal Health. According to media reports, Dr. Menardi's involvement was to help ensure the products are safe and healthy for pets.

“Dogs, too, like to be soothed and calmed and made to feel better,” Stewart reportedly said. “Some dogs are anxious. Some dogs ache from arthritic conditions or aching joints or previous wounds. Some dogs’ anxiety extends to getting along with other dogs. And all dogs just want to feel good.”

According to Dr. Jerry Klein, the American Kennel Club’s Chief Veterinary Officer, some anecdotal evidence from pet owners suggests CBD can help treat an animal’s pain and help control seizures. He also explained that some pet owners give their dogs CBD “because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety impact,” and other potential benefits.

However, he added that there is not yet any scientific data on the effects that CBD could have on dogs. As a result, it may be prudent for pet owners to follow dosing instructions carefully and be on the lookout for potential side effects, like dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, or drowsiness.

An American Kennel Club article advises pet owners on the best way to introduce CBD products to their pet. It states, “Any medication or supplement carries the risk of a reaction. It is always advisable, when giving your dog something new, to start out with small amounts then closely monitor the effects. And always check with your veterinarian first.”
