New study shows hopeful uses for CBD in treating heroin addiction

A recent publication from the American Journal of Psychiatry shows new possibilities for how CBD may be able to help people recover from one of the nastiest addictions.

Formerly, many consumers of the non-psychoactive cannabis compound have touted its abilities in overcoming opioids, but the science was less than satisfying. That may be slowly changing with a recent study by psychiatrists that shows CBD can reduce cravings and anxieties that come from opioid withdrawal. [1]

The subjects of the study were a group of 42 people who had used heroin for an average of 13 years, according to reporting from the Rolling Stone. [2]

Two to three times as effectively as control groups using a placebo over the course of the study, CBD was able to reduce cravings from heroin withdrawal. This could become highly useful in the wake of an extensive opioid addiction crises that continues to wreak havoc across the U.S. [2]

“It’s not addictive,” lead on the study Yazmin Hurd told the Rolling Stone. “No one is diverting it. It doesn’t get you high, but it can reduce craving and anxiety… [T]his can really help save lives.” [2]

NBC News reports that the study was performed by the Mount Sinai Hospital’s Addiction Institute, based in New York. The preliminary findings from the small study will have to be borne out by more and more research, as admitted in the report itself, but it serves as a serious first step for research in the U.S. [4]

Before the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized hemp and its derivative, CBD, much of the research on cannabidiol came from places in Europe with more open attitudes toward the substance. This New York study may be the grounding for a new body of American research that directs consumers and regulators to see CBD’s awesome benefits.

“The intense craving is what drives the drug use," Hurd told CNN. "If we can have the medications that can dampen that [craving], that can greatly reduce the chance of relapse and overdose risk.” [3]

Addiction isn’t the only area where people are seeking CBD’s help. All over, customers are reaching for CBD oils, edibles and lotions for their joint pain, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness and some forms of epilepsy.
